Books For New Aquarium Owners

For anyone who is contemplating setting up a small home aquarium the starting point must be to do a little bit of research, which often means turning to the books. Here therefore are one or two suggested titles to get you going in the right direction.

I would start with The Aquarium Handbook by David Goodwin. For many people this is the definitive guide to freshwater aquariums and it includes an excellent guide to the best species to keep in a freshwater aquarium. The guide includes very nice and clear pictures of the species recommended and also covers such things as their feeding habit. As if this were not enough, David goes on to provide information about a range of aquatic plants which are suitable for a freshwater aquarium. This is an excellent book providing the beginner with a reference for stocking a new aquarium and general advice on keeping fish.

My next selection would by You and Your Aquarium by Dick Mills. This is an interesting read and covers both freshwater and saltwater aquarium fish providing a species guide to probably most of the popular fish kept in home aquariums today. The book also talks about setting up your first aquarium and goes into some detail on such things as different types of tank, heating and filtration systems and feeding fish.

Another good set of books for beginners is Corals of The World which comes in 3 volumes. If you wish to add corals to your aquarium then this really is a ‘must read’ set of publications covering corals from all over the world. The books include both technical and non-technical information on a variety of corals, as well as pictures of many quite beautiful corals and details of their history.

There are also a couple of magazines which can be of great help to new aquarium owners.

The first is Practical Fish Keeping (PFK) magazine which keeps you up to date with what is happening in the world of fish keeping and also regularly answers questions asked by new aquarium owners.

The second magazine is Tropical Fish Hobbyist which again provides excellent information and advice to those people who wish to keep tropical fish. This particular magazine also frequently reviews aquarium products.
